Before beginning fault location, ensure the UAT-600-T transmitter and AF-600 A-Frame are properly set up.
- Connect the A-Frame: Connect the AF-600 A-Frame accessory to the UAT-600-T transmitter. This combination is essential for accurate ground fault detection.
- Ipo Atagba: Set the UAT-600-T transmitter to the "direct test lead connection" mode. This ensures the correct signal is transmitted for the A-Frame to detect.
- Signal Selection: On the transmitter, select either "A-Lo" (A-Frame low signal) for higher accuracy pinpointing, or "A-Hi" (A-Frame high signal) if the line to be surveyed is long or the fault resistance is high.
- Signal Strength Output: Set the signal strength output on the transmitter to "1". Only increase this setting if the resulting signal strength is poor, to avoid signal overflow.

Follow these steps to effectively locate ground faults using the Amprobe AF-600 A-Frame.
- Agbara Tan: Turn on the AF-600 A-Frame unit.
- Initial Positioning: Use the left/right indicator arrows on the A-Frame's display to position the A-Frame directly over the cable. Begin this process near the transmitter.
- Walking the Line: As you walk along the route of the line, allow a couple of seconds for the readings to stabilize. Place the spikes of the A-Frame into the ground approximately every two or three paces.
- Approaching the Fault: In the proximity of the fault, maintain the A-Frame aligned with the cable using the left/right arrows. The A-Frame will detect the fault signal, and the fault direction compass arrow will point forward.
- Crossing the Fault: When you cross the exact location of the fault, the compass arrow will change direction. Simultaneously, the two-digit fault signal level will begin to decrease as you move away from the fault.
- Pinpointing the Fault: To pinpoint the fault accurately, carefully place the A-Frame both immediately before and immediately after the point where the compass direction changes and the signal level starts to decrease. The point of maximum reading just before the direction change, and the point of minimum reading just after, will help in precise fault identification.
