Both the Tone Generator and the LAN Scout Jr. 2 require batteries for operation.
- VDV500-063 Tone Generator: Requires 4x AAA batteries. Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit, insert batteries according to polarity markings, and close the cover securely.
- VDV526-200 LAN Scout Jr. 2 Cable Tester: Requires 2x AAA batteries. Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit, insert batteries according to polarity markings, and close the cover securely.
Connecting the Tone Generator
To connect the Tone Generator to a cable for toning or testing:
- For telephone or RJ45 data jacks, use the integrated RJ11 plug or an appropriate adapter.
- For open-ended wires, use the Angled Bed of Nails (ABN) clips. Ensure a secure connection to the wires.

Toning Wires
- Connect the Tone Generator to the cable you wish to trace using the RJ11 plug or ABN clips.
- Press the power button on the Tone Generator.
- Select one of the five distinct tone cadences using the tone selection buttons. The selected tone will be transmitted through the cable.
Tracing Wires with the Probe
- Power on the Wire Tracing Probe.
- Adjust the volume on the probe as needed.
- Move the probe tip along the suspected cable path. The probe will amplify the tone signal, allowing you to identify the correct cable.
- Use the integrated work light on the probe tip for visibility in dark spaces.
- For noisy environments, connect headphones (sold separately) to the 3.5 mm jack on the probe.
Continuity and Polarity Testing
- Connect the Tone Generator to the cable using the ABN clips or RJ11 plug.
- Select the 'TEST MODE' on the Tone Generator.
- Observe the clearly labeled LEDs for indications of continuity (CONT) and polarity (NORM/REV).

Testing Data Cables (CAT 5e, CAT 6/6A, RJ45)
- Ensure the LAN Scout Jr. 2 and its remote unit are powered on.
- Connect one end of the data cable to the RJ45 port on the main LAN Scout Jr. 2 unit and the other end to the RJ45 port on the remote unit.
- Press the 'TEST' button. The backlit LCD will display pin-to-pin wiremap results.
- The display will indicate if the cable passes or if there are faults such as open, short, miswire, or split-pair. It also tests for shield continuity.

Toning Function (LAN Scout Jr. 2)
The LAN Scout Jr. 2 can generate multiple tone frequencies. To use this feature, a separate probe (e.g., Klein Tools VDV500-123, sold separately) is required.
- Connect the LAN Scout Jr. 2 to the cable.
- Press the tone button on the LAN Scout Jr. 2 to activate the tone generator.
- Use a compatible wire tracing probe to detect the tone and identify the cable.
