About PERMEA-TEC manuals on Manuals.plus

PERMEA-TEC is a brand of personal protective equipment (PPE) assessment tools manufactured by SKC Inc., a global leader in industrial hygiene and safety sampling solutions. The PERMEA-TEC product line primarily consists of microencapsulation detection indicators and sensor pads that are worn directly on the skin under protective gloves. These sensors provide immediate visual feedback by changing color when specific toxic chemicals—such as solvents, amines, acids, or isocyanates—permeate the protective gear.

Designed for real-world validation of PPE effectiveness, PERMEA-TEC sensors help safety professionals determine user-safe time periods for gloves and clothing in hazardous environments. Some sensors also include charcoal pads for subsequent laboratory analysis, allowing for the identification of non-polar solvents that may not trigger an immediate color change.

  • How do PERMEA-TEC sensors work?

PERMEA-TEC sensors use a colorimetric screening method with microencapsulation detection indicators. They are attached to the skin at points of contact (like fingers or palms) under a glove. If the chemical permeates the glove, the sensor changes color (e.g., from white to gray or red) to indicate breakthrough.

  • What chemicals can PERMEA-TEC sensors detect?

There are specific sensors available for various chemical groups, including Solvents, Aromatic Amines, Aromatic Isocyanates, Aliphatic Isocyanates, Aliphatic Amines, Acids/Bases, Phenols, and Nickel.

  • What if the solvent is nonpolar and does not cause a color change?

For PERMEA-TEC Solvent sensors, nonpolar solvents may not trigger the color change indicator. However, the sensors contain a charcoal pad that traps permeating solvents. This pad can be removed and sent to a laboratory for analysis via Gas Chromatography (GC) to identify the breakthrough.

  • Where should I place the sensors?

Sensors should be affixed to the thumb, middle finger, and palm on the outside of the inner glove (if double gloving) or directly on the skin at points of greatest contact and abrasion before gloving.
